What is the Proper Way to Wear a Watch?

How should one wear an automatic watch or any watch for that matter? It seems to be some sort of tradition that people should be wearing a watch where the face of it is facing you. Although you can see most people wearing a timepiece this way, there are some that would actually wear it any other way.

You see, there are some people that would wear watches inside their wrist or with the watch case pointing downward. There are also some that would either wear it backward or even upside down.

Are there any practical reasons why people are doing this? In today’s article, I will touch upon this topic and tell you what the correct and proper way to wear a watch is.

Why Do People Wear Watches Upside Down?

Although it is customary to be wearing a watch with the topside facing you, there are some people that are going against the norm and wearing a watch upside down. Are there any good reasons why they do that? Well, here are some:

To Protect the Watch from Damage

One of the main reasons why people are wearing a watch upside down is to protect the timepiece from any damage. Unless your watch’s protective glass is made of sapphire crystal or if you are wearing any of the G-shock watches out on the market, your watch can be susceptible to scratches which can decrease the value of the said timepiece.

There is a reason why Casio has decided to create nearly-indestructible watches and that is because they want to cater to the people that want a timepiece that can last for a very long time.

Furthermore, this notion also prompted other watchmakers to make use of titanium as a means of creating a robust and durable watch that never breaks.

Makes It Easier to Tell the Time

In certain professions, some people would have their hands facing a certain way. For instance, a car mechanic who is tightening some screws might have his wrist facing the other direction and for him to tell the time, he will have to stop what he is doing just to do so.

When a watch is facing downward, it is much easier for any person to tell the time and they do not have to stop what they are doing just to know what the current time is.

Avoid Glare and Reflection

Do remember that the thing that protects the watch face is glass. Whether it is mineral glass or sapphire glass, the material itself can reflect glare and light to the user’s face.

Having the watch worn upside down easily fixes the problem. In addition, if you want to know what the time is, you can easily glance on the watch without ever having to worry about any light reflections or whatnot.
